Their mission is to source and sell sustainable and fairly traded goods from economically disadvantaged groups using an ethical and transparent framework, promoting equality and committing to environmentally friendly practices.

The One World Shop was set up by George Shand, a keen activist from Edinburgh with a passionate belief in trade justice and community-led initiatives.
He started by running a stall selling fairly traded products in 1983 with a small team of volunteers, this then developed into a permanent shop at St John’s Church.
By 1985 the shop had become a limited company with charitable status and it has grown substantially since then, now employing three full time staff, several part-time members and a great team of volunteers.
Today they aim to always make the shop a warm and welcoming place, selling a stunning range of Fairtrade food and drinks, homeware, jewellery, accessories, toys, cards, and books both in shop and online. They import directly from community groups in Bangladesh, Nepal, India and South Africa when they can.
They have spent time with many of their producers all over the world and have built great relationships over the 40+ years they have been trading.
Some of their producers also get the opportunity to visit them, usually during Fairtrade Fortnight.

The One World Shop played a leading role in helping both Edinburgh and Glasgow become Fairtrade Cities in 2004 and 2006 respectively and in 2021 they received the Scottish Fair Trade Award for Best Fair Trade Business.
