“Always moving forward, always progressing, always surprising. From the beginning our journey has encompassed the essence, the heart of what we do; it’s always been the same: it was there at the start, it’s still there now and it will always be there.
Constant creativity; nothing changes…it only evolves.”
These are words which sum up this highly successful hair salon in Edinburgh’s West end and can also describe managing director Jason Miller.
Jason has been hairdressing for 41 years and a couple of years before that he was working at the salon as a Saturday boy. Amazing for someone who doesn’t look a day over 40!
In all those years he has never tired of the job. A job which has given him so many opportunities, amazing experiences and a plethora of awards.
However, there is a side to Jason which you may not know. He is also a very talented artist.
Working in an industry surrounded by creative people, it seems only logical that he should take the next step to challenge himself further and painting is what he felt compelled to try.
With no formal art training, Jason is largely self-taught. He admits there has been a lot of trial and error over the years and he is still learning.
He is inspired by many artists. Mark Rothko, Gerhard Richter and Peter Doig are just some of the artists whose work he admires but inspiration can come from interiors or images seen in magazines or on Instagram.
His work caught the attention of Edinburgh’s prestigious Open Eye Gallery who were first to show his work in a mixed exhibition a few years ago. As an unknown artist this was a big deal for Jason.
He has also been supported by Ian Smith Interior Design, Arusha Gallery and West end’s own Gallery Ten who appreciate the colours and textures of his abstract work.
Does this mean Jason has a retirement plan in sight?
“I’m really not sure if I want to retire. What I do know is I always want to be doing something creative. It’s the way I’m wired. Painting is definitely going to be a part of the future.”
Like the salon itself, Jason will also be moving forward, always progressing, always surprising.
