In 2015 businesses in Edinburgh’s West End voted to set up a Business Improvement District (BID), to deliver a business plan that focussed on the incremental improvements to the commercial attractiveness of the West End, positioning the area as a quality destination within the Edinburgh visitor experience.
This private investment, in the form of annual levy fees from West End businesses, were scheduled to raise over £577,000 with a contribution of £80,000 from City of Edinburgh Council (CEC) between 2015 and 2020. Due to the pandemic, the levy payment fees were cancelled from 2019.
On 31 March 2021, the West End BID arrangements were terminated, and the BID board agreed to invest remaining funds in a Digital High Street project, to build on the existing digital assets developed since 2015.
This has allowed Edinburgh-WestEnd.co.uk to be re-designed and a small team to work part-time to create and curate social media content to share on existing channels. On a voluntary basis, all local businesses are invited to list their business on this website and provide content for sharing in the form of a news article and social media posts.
