It was a true family effort to get the business up and running in those days. It quickly became established as a quality food outlet, using locally sourced ingredients, with friendly service. A simple but effective combination. The cafe focused on fresh, homemade food at sensible prices.
In 2001 Nikki’s moved to bigger premises two doors down on William Street. The company expanded considerably and the outside catering branch of the business was created. Nikki is Andrew’s sister. When she decided to spread her wings and move to the States, Andrew took over the business, buying it outright in 2006.
In 2017 Andrew bravely re-branded the business to become Fox & Co Caterers. Although Nikki’s was a well- known name about the West end, the rebranding proved a stroke of genius; as the catering arm of the business won new clients such as Scottish Rugby and Hearts FC.
Like many businesses, the Covid pandemic hit the West end hard and, as cafes closed their doors, Fox & Co had to quickly adapt the way they operated or face closure for good.
One of the ways they expanded was the introduction of the Fox and Co pie shop. The company had always made pies but during the pandemic this side of the business grew hugely – as did the size of their pies – which were made to order by Andrew in the café. Now the steak pies, chicken pies and veggie pies are as famous as the bacon rolls and giant scones.
Fox & co is proud to be one of the longest running businesses in Edinburgh’s west end, especially in an ever-changing climate, and we hope they will be here for many more years to come!
